Okay, let's get started, I'll explain "advanced techniques" and terms used in Smash Melee. first off,
MLG : major gaming league, the cream of crop in video game tourneys, most people only play with their rules (which we'll get to later)
Nicknames that some (far from all) players use to describe a couple players, good to know when people are talking about them, nothing more.
Doc: Dr. Mario's nickname
Jiggs: Jigglypuff's nickname
Pika : Pikachu's nickname
Weege : Luigi's nickname
Wavedash: a move that keeps combos alive and creates safety distance in 1 vs 1 matches but should be seldomly used in free for alls, to do it, when your character is about to leave the ground in a jump, you will see thier knees bend, at this point, press the dodge button(L or R) and the stick diagonally forward to the ground, it looks like a dash because the smoke from a dash appears but it's faster. try practicing with Luigi as he slides the most and it'll be more noticeable. the easiest way to learn is in training mode at slow speeds. Luigi, Ice Climbers, and Marth are the best Wavedashers.
Desyncing: using 2 ice climbers seperatly, through certain means, 999% damage can reached without letting your opponent getting a hit in!
L-canceling: some characters have post attack lag that occurs in the air after an attack. If you hold L button when they land the recovery speeds up dramatically! try this with Bowser's back A air or link's down A air.
Short Hopping: tap the jump button twice quickly to waste both jums at once, it's mainly used to cancel lag with fox/falco's blaster attack making it faster and effective or with aerial combos.
Fast Falling: press down at the peak of your jump, used for keeping aerial combos alive and you'll move around quicker!
Shining: nothing special, a term used for fox/falco's reflector
Tiny Jumping: not a short hop, tap the jump button so slightly(your character will jump very tiny) used for all combos, remember most aerial attacks are stronger than ground ones
Super Wavedash: only Samus can do this, drop a little bomb and as it explodes you'll wavedash, when done correctly you'll go 1/2 the distance of final destination! great for recooperating and Samus can hold opponents at bay by using missles after
Long Grappling Beam: Samus lovers will love this, use Samus' grapple beam and after it comes out but before it goes back in, keep tapping Z and up and down on the CONTROL PAD, the beam will be 3 times as long and home in on enemies! even though it'll home in you'll have to press Z again to grab them. after you die you'll have to do it all over again! air recovery: press the control stick left and right after being sent flying, you'll recover faster
Chain throw: grabbing an opponent before they touch the ground, usually used with up or down throws, because the opponent comes back to you
Directional influence(DI): if you press the control stick a certain direction while being attacked you'll influence the attack and can escape some combos
Dash cancel: press down while dashing to cancel and confuse opponents!
Dash Dance: continually dash left and right for a brief period of time with a fast character(Pikachu, Marth, Fox) to confuse the opponent
Edge guarding: after you knock an opponent off the stage, guard the edge and make sure they don't get back!
Edge Hogging: only one fighter can grab the edge at a time, if your opponents only chance of living is grabbing the edge, quickly wavedash backwards or tiny jump backwards and grab the edge yourself! easy to do with floaty characters like peach, jigglypuff, or Luigi
"Fox Trot": some people's starting dash animation is faster than the actual dash, by starting a dash, stopping, then starting in a rapid fashion you'll go fsater than dashing with some characters(Fox,Marth, etc.)
Item Catching: if you jump into the air where somebody throws an item and you air dodge, press A when the item gets to you to catch it! great with pokeballs
Teching: when you hit the ground or a wall, press L or R to recover faster!
Priority: every move has priority, meaning when some moves connect the move with higher priority wins
Playing With Fire: It takes Electrode exactly 3 seconds to explode, on the last second, you can actually pick him up and hurl him at other fighters! Since you have 1 second, most players self destruct and the window of opportunity is very small.
"Sex Kick": I don't know why it's called this, but it's a simple term used to describe a neutral A air attack, most are kicks, ie. Samus, Mario, Luigi, etc.
shffl: or shuffling, stands for the fastest way possible to do an air move. it stands for short hop, fast fall, L-cancel, this does the move quick and you'll recover quick!
Spike: some characters have ungodly moves while in the air that can almost instant KO the opponent at a high speed! some are Mario, Luigi, Ct. Falcon, Falco, DK, Marth, Shiek, Samus, Ganondorf, and Ice Climbers. the move knocks the opponent straight down and is usually a forward or down attack in the air, Mario and Ice Climbers are actually the only ones that do it forward in the air, everybody else i mentioned is down A in the air
Triangle Jumps: not a wavedash, but similar. used against characters with range. to triangle jump, you jump and after you've left the ground air dodge awy from an attack towards the ground. great for dodging Marth attacks
Luigi Ladder: a banned move from tournaments but fun at home, if 2 people are on the same team as Luigi, they can get just out of range(so it doesn't flame) of his up B move and keep pressing it at the same time to stall a match a get to unreachable heights. was once used in a tourney to stall time and was quickly banned after
Wall of pain(WoP): Strategy used with Jigglypuff, basically keep on using the same air attacks to play mind games with your opponent.
Crew: the friends you smash with, this term is also used for many fighting games like Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Virtua Fighter.
Dashing VS Walking: ok, you should know the difference between the two, but some characters have a weak dash attack(Luigi) and are better off walking quickly to the opponent because the attack is different when walking
Spamming: easy, the repitition of a single long distance move,(Pikachu's Thunderbolt, Mario's Fireball) used to annoy opponents and play mindgames
Extra Air: with Samus and Link, if you try to grab the stage during an air dodge, you'll get a slight boost
Tilts: tilt attacks/pressing the stick slightly, good attacks for juggling
Attack Lingo: (n), (f), (b), (d), (u), air stand for the direction and attack, for example, back air attack would be bair or back air, it's just abbreviations
Billhole: a place where a cowardly player hides for safety, like the tailfin area on the corneria stage
Caping: using Doc or Mario's cape to reflect opponents back away from the stage, use against moves like green missle or fire fox
Sweetspot: the place where the move does most damage, for example, the very tip of Marth's blade causes the most damage, and altough Roy has more range, his sweetspot is the middle of his sword
Swordplay: term used for different moves Marth & Roy can perfom with thier down B atacks, if you press B again when they change color you can make a combo. different directions do different attacks.
Waveshining: Wavedashing and Fox/Falco's reflector, it's pretty effective
MLG Smash Legends: It's good to know other high caliber smashers, This way you'll know ahead of time what your up against in a tourney, and they play unworldly. And remember, you're considered a Legend from tournament play, and most pros can play and adjust to every fighter, scary huh?
Ken : The World Champion of Super Smash Bros. Melee
Isai : The Champ in the original Super Smash Bros.
Germ : The best Link player in the U.S.
Bob$ and Caveman : The best Doc players in the U.S.
Thomas Tippman : World Renowned Ganondorf player
The Cape, Azen, Muffin & BrownMario : Considered the best Mario players, BrownMario is looked at as the best Mario in the world though.
PimpUigi : Best Luigi player
AOB : Great DK player
Masashi : Probably the best edge guarder, Also a Japenese player. Insanely good Fox and Marth player, who barely uses advanced techniques.
Azen & Neo : 2 of the best Marth & Roy players
MLG Tournament Rules: $20 for singles competition and $10 per team. Stock Match, 1 and a 1/2 minute per stock, no items, certain stages are banned. In team matches team attack is ON to prevent spamming.
Legal MLG Tourney Stages: only 7-9 actual stages are legal for most Smash tourneys, to prevent advantages, since some fighters jump higher or move quicker. Thus they're called neutral stages. The first six I'll list are always active, the last three are active sometimes. Different stages are available in random pick and most banned stages inculde certain featues like damaging the player(Corneria), moving around(infinite glacier), bad camera(Hyrule Temple), too big (hyrule again), remember, the tourneys focus on 1 vs 1 or team matches and time is a factor so they don't want a pichu running around evading every attack on a stage like Hyrule Temple
Neutral Stages :
Final Destination
Battlefield
Yoshi's Story
Fountain of Dreams
Kirby 64
Pokemon Stadium
Mute City (sometimes banned)
Poke Floats (sometimes banned)
Mute City (sometimes banned)
Banned stages: at every tourney, Hyrule Temple and Yoshi 64 should always be banned. Don't ask me why, I don't know, they just are. Some MLG banned stages include:
Fourside, Brinstar Depths, Icicle Mountain, Termina
those are some terms used in smash bros. melee, now i'll give you the tourney tier list which shows the best characters in no particular order based on how pros play them, you don't have to believe it at all, at times i don't, but it's good to know.
Top Tier: Shiek, Fox, Marth
Upper Tier: Peach, Falco, C. Falcon, Samus
High Tier: Jigglypuff, Dr. Mario, Ganondorf, Mario, Ice Climbers
Middle Tier: Luigi, Pikachu, Link, Roy, DK, Zelda
Lower Tier: Ness, Young Link, Yoshi, Kirby, Mr. Game & Watch, Bowser
Bottom Tier: Mewtwo, Pichu
I'd like you all to see this in action, first download DC++ at dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/ after that, you can watch this vid of Bob$, a renowned pro at www.ssbm.it/musicvids/Overdose.wmv
I hope everybody can learn from this and improve their game, for any questions, pm me or post it. I really recommend downloading the first link so you can watch the second link and see most of this in action. And i'd like anybody possible to download the first link to watch the vid. If the download doesn't work try these: utrum.dyndns.org:8000/ or this for macs utrum.dyndns.org:8000/
