Well, since I know have my OWN laptop, this gives me a more practical reason to IM. So, should I do? Which one should I use? Etc.

Three letters: MSN. Yahoo is good, but only cause of voice (MSN has voice as well, but it's in clips, not like a free phone call.), and a better picture sharing. But on MSN you can have custom smileys, and get MSN Plus! cause it has scripts you can get. Also Plus! has voice clip stuff, so you can record voice clips, or import one's that are already on your CPU. (Such as downloaded unprotected music, or things you've recorded with your mic)
And don't get AIM. It's only good cause it's an IM. But Yahoo and MSN are IM's too.
Also Xfire is great for voice, if you've got a mic. It's also really good for games. So you can play some kind of game, and leave Xfire on voice, and still talk to people.

I say you should get them all. No matter how hard you try, you just can't get all of your friends to use the same damn IM. -___-; ...Actually, I prefer Trillian. I can log on all those other IMs at the same time(So I'm a bit lazy to start them one by one...sue me.). Use that if you don't mind the lack of flashy features the others have. smileys are cool though...

Stay away from Trillian. It's only appeal is that it lets you log into multiple messengers, but it's unorganized and messy. Like a pot of stew.
In terms of which ones people use most, AIM and MSN will be your key to contacting members on this site, more likely MSN. I like to have AIM because it's got a cleaner interface and technically it's just superior to the others. I don't really like YIM that much although it's also heavily used.
Get all three. That's the way I roll.
