Super Mario GalaxyPublisher: Nintendo Developer: Nintendo EAD Tokyo Genre: Platformer Players: 1-2 Players Elements: Reinvent the 3D platformer by taking it for a ride like it hasn't seen since Super Mario 64. The long jump is back too. =D Graphics: Crisp, clean visuals. The programmers put the Wii's shader and lighting effects to great use because although there are some jagged edges, the colors and way everything blends and stands out on it's own is incredible. Soundtrack: Possibly the greatest non-RPG Mario score we've had yet. I would tip my hat to the composer for this soundtrack because it mixes redone versions of old themes and has piano tracks that could put Final Fantasy to shame. Gameplay: The axis of some planets takes getting used to, but Mario controls as familiar as he did in Super Mario 64. The motion based maneuvers aren't overused nor do they make you feel like a fish flopping around on land. Longevity: 5/5 Overall: 10/10 Super Mario Galaxy is well worth the wait and is sure to surprise even the most blind, used-to-be Mario fans. So many elements have been retained from games as far back as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 64. Not to forget the insane amount of new elements that seamlessly blend well with the planet based gameplay and what has to be some of the greatest level design and use of physics I will ever see in my life. Some people I've heard complain about the camera controls, which are mapped to the d-pad. However in ten hours of gameplay I haven't had to use the camera once. Unlike SM64 and SMS, the camera is fixed most of the time and the result turns out far better than you would expect. The two player control is very original and fun, assuming each player plays their role. You don't want the second player trying to take out enemies by jumping on them with Mario. Because the first player will be doing that quicker, a miscommunication can end up in a sloppy mess. However with a cooperative, smart second player you can seamlessly gather star bits, freeze the enemies and area around you, and perform the god of all Mario jumps. The role is to back Mario up, not for two people to share playing him. This game has to be the hardest 3D Mario Platformer yet. Gone are the ten or so chances at taking hits from Mario 64 and Sunshine. Now, like the 2D games, you have a max of 3 smackers (assuming you always had your fire flower back on the NES) before Mario takes the plunge and you lose a life. This balances well though because you can either jump on enemies for coins that replenish health or spin attack them for star bits. Because of the motion controls it takes not just timing, but much more accuracy than before. I found myself spending ten minutes on some levels which is very long for a Platformer. The one-shot galaxies offer as much and more challenge than the non-FLUDD levels in Sunshine, which can be quite intimidating to be honest. However there's so much fun variety you won't want to put the controller down simply to take part in it. Within the early stages of the game I had surfed on a Manta Ray, rolled on a giant ball, donned a Bee outfit, and zipped across worlds where all the platforms disappeared under me or some of it appeared in front of me. Why a ten out of ten? Well, it does have it's flaws. No matter how many lives you get when you restart the game you only have about ten or so, however this works fine if you suck hard and end up with less than that anyway. There are also slight visual flaws (jaggies) to be had, and the story isn't focused on too strongly nor is it anything we haven't seen before. However, even the most elite games have flaws. Halo lacks enjoyment without online, Final Fantasy X is linear, God of War 2 is short, etc. etc. It's the ones with the least flaws that deserve this kind of praise. This is not only my pick for the greatest game this year, but it's an obvious contender for the best Wii game, best Mario game, and yes, the very best game ever. Over 30 critics in the US alone have been instrumental in making Super Mario Galaxy the highest reviewed game this year. I have to say, I couldn't possibly disagree with them. It feels familiar and new at the same time, and brings back what you love and know so well from the Mario series. I've had a Wii since launch and haven't played a game crazy like this yet.

It looks like absolutely godly fun. I asked for it on my Christmas list, having brothers who also enjoy Mario is such a nice thing. <_<!

The game has everything. It's pretty damn crazy. I wrote that review around 30 stars in. Now I'm around 55 (max is 120, 60 to complete it), and my impression from it has only increased. Ice Mario may just be the most fun powerup to use.

Can't wait to play it, I'm going to be getting it and playing it in just a few days, it sounds like this will definitely keep me plenty entertained until Super Smash Brothers Brawl comes out 50 days from now.

Just got it the day before yesterday, and I simply love it, it's so handy to be able to get any Star bits on the screen by just pointing at them.
I got so many games for Christmas, I'll have no problem at all passing time until February 10th now, because I just got:
Super Mario Galaxy. This game is out of this world. XD It's a lot of fun, and I was a bit worried about it possibly have awkward controls, but it's actually good and easy to handle.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. A great game! Being the first Metroid game I've ever gotten, it is a fresh experience for me, and I really like always using the motion sensor for aiming and turning.
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. This is some fun, not great, but I'll get some play time out of this.
Link's Crossbow Training. It came with the Wii Zapper, the thing's a real blast, but the game doesn't have a lot to it, 9 different sets of 3 stages, and that's it for the whole game, but they're a lot of fun.
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Kind of an oddly controlled game, it'll take me some serious getting used to, having to move using the stylus, but from the little I played it looks like it could be some fun.
Flash Focus: Vision Training in minutes a day. I haven't even played this game yet, so I can't really say anything about it at the moment.
Sonic the Hedgehog (Xbox 360. Can't remember the rest of the title, or even if there is anything more to it, sorry. ). Haven't played this yet either, can't say anything about it yet.
Virtua Fighter 5. Haven't played this much at all, just played 10 matches against my brother in Versus, but it looks to be some fun, and has very good graphics, but not as many characters as I'd like a fighting game to have.
Shrek Super Slam. Haven't played this yet, just thought this might be something for an extra little bit of fun.
That's 9 games for Christmas (2 of them; Crossbow Training and Flash Focus, being just partial games really, not much content, but fun for a while, and skill testing.
Anyways, sorry for going so off topic for so long, just wanted to get that out of the way all in this post, since it is of a review of what probably is my favourite game I got for Christmas, that or Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, which I am really enjoying, hate it when I get stuck though and can't figure out what to do, like right now... >_>
But yeah, Super Mario Galaxy is an excellent game, and will take up a good enough amount of days for me to complete.
After the past couple days, I have obtained 20 Power Stars so far (so I'm a third there, then there will be half the stars left to still get after getting through the ending.

Well i did get it, Man, it's fun! It really makes SM64 fans happy for Mario to in some degrees go back to what made his 3D gameplay entertaining. Being upside down in that game took a while for me to adjust to, and the 3 health is pretty lame, but hey, this is definitely a 10/10 game. Kudos, DAN.

The game isn't very challenging, but the lack of hits you can take keeps it from being TOO easy.
