I previously was thinking there would be 35-40 characters for a while, but after seeing the kind of updates at the Smash Bros. Dojo website, I can tell they aren't pulling any punches in this one.
Now I am guessing there will be around 45. Just look how many characters are in that one Mortal Kombat game (can't remember the full name of it).
For whatever chance there is that Brawl might be the final Super Smash Bros. game, I say it will have a very large character roster, many stages, and longer 1P Modes in genereal (especially Adventure Mode).
How many characters do you think will be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and why?

(DBZ got 100...) Sothe for Fire Emblem is a HUGE possibility, and one Fox and I have thought about alot, think about the awesomeness of a knife fighter in SSBB...Soren and Zihark are another two that should be in. Although I don't think Zihark has that much of a chance, I'm really hoping so... Also, Dante is probly my most wanted character...I can't write him off completely, but I seriously doubt he'll be in...-_-

Why not vote 50 or 51+ and let your voice be heard throughout S.F. by members and guests alike? I'd love it if there would be over 50 characters, but I honestly would prefer quality over quantity.
It'd be kind of disappointing to have just a bunch of fillers to make the Character Roster look big...
I'd like it to have characters like Lucario (though Charizard who was my 2nd most wanted character for SSBB is in, I'm not sure I'll be fortunate enough to have Lucario, my most wanted character in as well...), Ridley, Krystal, Wolf, and other good characters to be in.
And I don't mean Wolf Link, although there was a hint of it in an issue of Nintendo Power, and since Ivysaur whom moves on all fours is in, then that means that characters who walk on all fours can be in it, so Link's Wolf form could be in it, only 2 Legend of Zelda characters have been confirmed so far..

I guess 40. But any higher number will be well received by me ^_^

I'm guessing 50. Because they nearly tripled the characters from SSB to SSBM. I know there aren't many characters left... So 50's a good number >_>

The original Super Smash Bros. had 12 characters, and Super Smash Bros. Melee has 25 (26 if you include Shiek), that's barely doubled.
But yeah, if they double 25, then they'll have 50 characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which wouldn't be as shockingly high of a number to me anymore.
They truly are putting everything they've got into SSBB, it is going to be an absolutely amazing game with a big, and great character roster, and we already know 18 of the characters that will be on it's character select screen (Zero Suit Samus excluded).

I've always said you can obtain 2x by adding x + x instead of mutiplying x times 2... They could be making an addition instead of a multiplication and end up with 3x for example.

The first game had 12 characters right. (12 times 2 = 24)+1 The second has 25 characters so. (25 times 2 = 50)+1 By my calculations The third game should have at least 50 characters. oh yeah!

I think if SSBB has 217 characters playable we'd get a lot of characters that should've just been an assist trophy, really.

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but not really.
However many characters are playable in the game, there'll be just 2 or 3 3rd party characters total (including Snake).
Which is fine with me, I like Super Smash Bros. games to stick many Nintendo characters and not much 3rd party characters.
It has been exclusively Nintendo Characters only in Super Smash Bros. games until Brawl came around, and Snake was confirmed to be in it (he is a really good character for it though don't get me wrong, he'll be fun to play as).

I refuse to believe that there'll only be 3 3rd party characters. EVEN AFTER I UNLOCK THEM ALL. XD I love the idea that there's other characters other than Nintendo only...

I do too, to some degree, I just don't want them to get too carried away with it, they must remember it is a Nintendo game, in which the two previous games of the series were where you would just "Duke it out with the Nintendo All-Stars!".

It was an exaggeration. I would never really want 217 characters in, only the somewhat main ones. Such as Krystal and Wolf from StarFox.

But if the future SSB games become like the DBZ games, we could easliy gave 100 characters...

True, apparantly, I wouldn't know though, I don't play Dragon Ball Z games, rented one once, and it got boring fast, never was that fun to me for a moment.
And yes, I would like to see Krystal and/or Wolf in Brawl to add to the group of Star Fox characters.
