Yes I'm turning a small piece of Shadrio's post into a thread. I want to discuss it! I find it interesting.
It's not just free MMORPG's though. World of Warcraft is one hell of a time sucking demon. I've heard rumors from my guild mate that to finish a single dungeon takes almost 12+ hours. (ONE DUNGEON. MY GOD.)
Also yes, a major amount of MMORPG's suck that crap out of your time, but that's because they were built that way. I mean seriously, World of Warcraft is BUILT to suck your time. They constantly add content because of they are also issuing a monthly fee, and every moment you waste on their game is just another dollar in their pocket. (Or in this case, another $5 billion...)[Did I mention I am not a fan of monthly fees? On ANY GAME. It's a game. I bought it in the store. I expect no more additional charges after buying it in the store. Nuff said.]
Free MMO's do the same thing, but they offer a different approach. What I've found is that they usually have a cash shop, and it's usually required to buy something from that cash shop JUST to be able to play the game effectively. Also, a lot of Free MMO's have just plain vanity items which are REALLY cool! However, the downfall is that a lot of them have expiration dates. *Cough*MapleStory*Cough*
Though I haven't ACTUALLY played WoW myself, it makes sense the way it's income is set up. I'm almost certain WoW is one HELL of a game because they keep adding content, and it's probably FILLED with HOURS AND HOURS of content. (I wouldn't be able to tell you the quality of the content... Again, I haven't played or payed the game.) But for a fun:time ratio, it scores really crappy.
I don't wish to spend my entire day trying to grind my character up to level 200 by killing 999 of the same monster for 7 hours straight.
Guild Wars... (Oh here it comes... The biased GW gamer trying to get his friends to buy the game...)
Lol Guild Wars has actually introduced an in-game store recently, and although I have actually been victim to buying things from there, I don't feel so bad. The items DON'T EXPIRE. >_<;
Anyway.
Guild Wars is set up in such a way that you can do bits and pieces any time you feel like it.
The missions take about an hour on average. I think the longest elite mission I've done took me about... An hour and a half to finish. (Though if you're a slow and steady gamer it may take more time.)
But Guild Wars gets stale once you've done everything over and over again. It unfortunatly has it's grinding too, but the grind in Guild Wars isn't about trying to effectively play the game. The grind in Guild Wars is strictly vanity. AND It's called... TITLE HUNTING. (And my god it's a pain. Lol)
Also, Guild Wars' story is "okay" but I dislike games that keep you on a storyline track. I like my games to be controlled by ME. So whenever I choose to do something different in the game, the game's path changes.
But anyway...
I wouldn't recommend anyone buy Guild Wars now. (Unless you wanted to, it's gonna be about a year or so before the next one.) >_>
If Guild Wars 1 and traditional MMO’s aren’t your cup of tea, at least try Guild Wars 2. >.> And look me up. (Because c'mon, interactive storyline, free roaming world, real-time events happening in the field, extreme character customization, charr, seriously compelling artwork, and a bucket of neat skills. I'm just sayin')
I'm not trying to sell the game. Really, all I'm trying to do is sell the game. (XD)

Well, I'm not really into free online games, as MMORPGs take out way too much time out of life and there's not fun compared to other games (in other words, in a Fun:Time Ratio).
